Environmental organisation Planet Ark is warning that as Australia's population density increases, the Australian ideal of a big backyard is disappearing.
Planet Ark has published the results of research showing the larger their backyard, the more time people spend doing outdoor activities.
But it's found that more and more people live in apartments with no garden, or homes with little outside space, and they're spending more time on passive activities indoors.
The organisation's spokeswoman Rebecca Gilling told Kerri Worthington Australians still hold a self-image of being outdoorsy, but that's no longer strictly true.
