They're on opposite ends of the age scale but Warren Potent and Aislin Jones' fate at the Rio Olympics was ultimately the same.

Potent's quest for a second Games medal in Rio ended on Friday after he finished 35th and missed the finals of the men's 50m rifle prone.

The 54-year-old won bronze in the event at the Beijing Olympics and gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Countryman Dane Sampson fared marginally better in 31st.

Jones also missed out on a shot at a medal, hitting 63 of 75 targets in the women's skeet for 17th place on debut.

The 16-year-old is now Australia's youngest shooter to compete at the Olympics, surpassing Peter Papps who was almost a year older at the 1956 Melbourne Games.

The fight continues for two other Australians on Saturday, as qualification continues in the men's skeet and 25m rapid fire pistol.

Paul Adams and Keith Ferguson stand ninth and 11th with two rounds remaining.

Both hit 72 of 75 targets over their first three rounds, three shots off the leader.

David Chapman ranked last in a field of 26 at the end of stage one in the rapid fire pistol.
