NRL drop food prices in push for crowds

The NRL are offering a $5 deal for a pie and soft drink before the two finals fixtures at Allianz Stadium this weekend.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and nothing draws a crowd like cheap feed.

In a last-ditch move to get the turnstiles spinning in the first week of the finals, the NRL are offering a $5 deal for a pie and soft drink at Allianz Stadium.

The Moore Park venue will host Friday night's qualifying final between the Sydney Roosters and Melbourne, as well as Sunday's elimination between Cronulla and South Sydney.

NRL crowds have dropped to 1000 less per game than in 2014 - their lowest count in over a decade - but the governing body is hoping to turn the trend with a 50 per cent discount on the average pie and drink at the footy.

The regular retail price at Allianz Stadium is $10.70.

NRL Head of Football Todd Greenberg said the game simply wanted to get more families through the gate.

"We're always looking at ways to make it more affordable for families to come to the footy," he said.

"This is the lowest price for a pie and soft drink in decades."

The only caveat is that the deal is only available in the Sydney Live Plaza outside the southern end of the stadium and only until kick-off.

In 2014, finals crowds across the NRL rose 16 per cent compared to the previous season.
