NRL to tighten player agent rules

The NRL player-agents scheme is set to undergo an overhaul aimed at bringing agents in line with the game's rules.

NRL player agents will be subject to the game's rules just like players, clubs and their officials under proposed changes to their accreditation scheme.

After the past three seasons were dogged by salary cap breaches handed out to both Parramatta and Manly, the new scheme will provide conduct and service standards.

"It's an improvement for the game," NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

"It's modernising the way we do our business. Everyone else outside of the agents fall into line with the way the game is governed and the rules of the game.

"In the past the NRL has had no powers in relation to agents and this has led to unsatisfactory outcomes in several cases.

"Agents acting professionally have nothing to fear from the revised scheme but it will give us the scope to deal appropriately with those who do not act in the best interests of the players and the game."

The proposal, which has the backing of the Rugby League Players' Association (RLPA), was presented to NRL club CEOs on Tuesday and is set to be implemented on November 1.

Under the system, all existing agents will be automatically accredited and their existing agreements with players will continue to remain in force.

"I think the new scheme really brings agents into the modern era of professional sport," RLPA chief executive Ian Prendergast said.

"It should be seen by everyone as a positive move for the game, particularly in terms of protecting the interests of players.

"But also the agents that operate with integrity, the clubs and the NRL itself.

"As you lift the standards of the scheme the good agents will rise to the top and the other agents will be supported to improve and if they don't they will be exposed."

The governing body also confirmed they are close to locking in next year's NRL season-opening match to be played in the United States.

The return of the NRL All Stars match, a Magic Round in Brisbane and a Sunday State of Origin in Perth have also been locked in for next year.
