The NRL will wait for a submission from South Sydney before deciding whether Greg Inglis's post-retirement role should be in the club's salary cap.
The Rabbitohs' cap position has come under scrutiny after they organised new roles for Inglis when he announced an immediate end to his playing career on Monday.
His decision to walk away from the remaining one-and-a-half years on his lucrative playing contract is likely to open a large chunk of the Rabbitohs' cap.
However, there are questions whether his new roles should be included.
"The NRL has made no determination on the Greg Inglis retirement arrangements. The Rabbitohs will make a submission to the salary cap auditor and then a determination will be made," the NRL tweeted on Wednesday.
Souths revealed their former skipper will transition into the football department, where he'll work as a development coach in their pathways system.
The former Kangaroos and Queensland State of Origin star will also juggle responsibilities with the club's charity arm, Souths Cares.
The NRL has also indicated Inglis could serve as an ambassador for the governing body, however, it is understood those roles are lump payments.
Rabbitohs general manager Shane Richardson revealed on Monday the club has already sat down with NRL boss Todd Greenberg over Inglis's decision.
Greenberg has a close relationship with Inglis, having served as a character reference for him during a drink-driving charge last year.
"Greg Inglis has 25 more years minimum of work in this great game of ours," Richardson said on Monday.
"And I don't think we should underestimate what he's done in the past and what he'll do in the future.
"From a football point of view, we sat down this week with Todd and went through the NRL, so we knew exactly where we were standing."
