NRL wants players studying, up-skilling

The NRL reportedly wants all players to take up study or other training so they have a non-league related fallback option.

The NRL has proposed that players extend their skills beyond the rugby league field, through university study or other training.

League chief executive Todd Greenberg told the ABC this would mean players "have something to fall back on".

Greenberg also hoped a condition like this would be considered as part of the league's new player deal, due to come into effect next year.

"I would expect that will be a big part of the collective bargaining agreement," he told the ABC.

It's reported that 80 per cent of players have taken up off-field training, but those who chose not to branch out beyond the football field were more likely to get into trouble, with the league's integrity unit having investigated more than 80 per cent of that group.

Greenberg's comments come after suspended Sharks fullback Ben Barba ditched the code for French rugby club Toulon, saying that he had no other option but to sign with the club to support his family.

Barba had been issued with a 12-week NRL suspension after a second positive test to cocaine during the Sharks premiership celebrations last year.
