A baby girl is in hospital after being burnt in an explosion at a home in NSW's Hunter region.

Police say it appears the small explosion at the Raymond Terrace home late on Saturday happened when an aerosol can was thrown into an open fire, sending hot coals flying in a number of directions.

The 16-month-old was treated by paramedics for burns to her leg before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. Her injuries are not life threatening.

Police say they have spoken to witnesses and don't expect to take further action.
