NSW bar first to lose licence under system

The NSW independent liquor authority has stripped a southwest Sydney karaoke bar of its licence, the first under the three-strike system.

A southwest Sydney karaoke bar has become the first NSW venue to be stripped of its licence under the government's three-strike laws.

The Gold Music Box karaoke bar at Belmore first popped up on the radar of authorities in April 2012 when staff were caught selling alcohol after hours.

The bar was given 12 months to implement a plan of management, but three subsequent police inspections in April, May and August last year revealed it had failed to do so.

And when officers arrived to check on the plan of management in August, a "heavily intoxicated" patron assaulted police, Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) documents reveal.

After a review of the circumstances a third strike was issued to the venue on Wednesday, Hospitality Minister George Souris said.

"This is the first venue to incur a third strike since the introduction of the Three Strikes disciplinary scheme on 1 January, 2012 and is a clear warning to all licensed venues that repeated offences will incur strikes, affecting a venue's operations and eventually its existence," he said.

"ILGA has also disqualified the licensee of the business and the business owner from holding a licence for at least 12 months."
