A boy is in a critical condition in a Sydney hospital after being hit by a car as he played on the street with mates on the NSW Central Coast.

A 10-year-old boy, who was playing with his friends in a suburban street, is fighting for his life after being hit by a car on the NSW Central Coast.

The accident happened on Prince Street in Wamberal, just north of Terrigal, at 5pm on Monday and the boy was airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old male driver was treated at the scene for shock and taken to Gosford Hospital for blood and urine testing.

The other passengers in the car have been interviewed by detectives, Inspector George Bradbury from Brisbane Water Local Area Command told ABC.
