NSW dentist banned over infection control

An inspection of Robert Starkenburg's Bondi Junction practice revealed visibly dirty equipment, the Civil and Administrative Tribunal says.

A Bondi Junction dentist, who put his patients at risk of blood-borne viruses, has had his registration cancelled.

Dr Robert Starkenburg's registration was originally suspended in 2014 after a patient complaint triggered an inspection of his premises which uncovered an "extreme breach" of infection control guidelines.

A decision by the Civil and Administrative Tribunal describes photos showing dirty and rusty dental equipment in a disorganised practice that Dr Starkenburg himself later described as "a bit third world".

His suspension was lifted in March 2016 after he improved his equipment and knowledge, but an inspection of his Bondi Junction premises in November again revealed visibly dirty equipment and out-of-date stock, the tribunal said.

On Thursday Dr Starkenburg's registration was cancelled, with the tribunal saying in its decision it held "grave concerns" over his ability to practice safely.
