NSW Farmers welcome ACCC appointment

The NSW Farmers Association has welcomed greater assistance for drought stricken farmers outlined in a Federal Government's white paper.

NSW farmers have applauded a government plan to inject greater agricultural expertise into Australia's competition watchdog.

Included in the federal government's white paper, released on Saturday, was the appointment of a new agricultural commissioner to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

"We have been lobbying the government to provide the ACCC with greater expertise in the agricultural sector and this is a big win," NSW Farmers Association President Fiona Simson said.

The association also welcomed the government's long-term focus on helping drought-affected farmers.

The agricultural competitiveness white paper includes up to $250 million in drought concessional loans each year for 11 years.

"This provides policy certainty for primary producers who put their businesses on the climatic front line every year," Ms Simson said.

It also outlines new measures for the farm management deposit scheme, which will allow farmers to minimise their tax and put more money aside to draw on when they're struggling financial.

Ms Simson, who also welcomed the paper's $500 million investment in future proofing water infrastructure, congratulated the government for recognising the value of agriculture.

"People will always need to eat. Food is the future and agriculture is the enabler," she said.
