NSW feasts for Christmas

Loved ones will gather this Christmas Day to celebrate and feast across NSW. For the lonely, a Sydney church has reached out to offer a free lunch.

Families and friends across NSW will gather this Christmas Day at lunches, on beaches and in churches.

By the end of the morning, wrapping paper will be strewn on the floor and loved ones will be gathering to tuck into a festive meal.

But sadly, some people don't have the money to party or anyone to join them.

So, a Sydney church has invited everyone left out of the festivities to a free street party with lunch and entertainment.

More than 800 people are expected to lunch together at Hughes Street in Potts Point when the Wayside Chapel hosts its annual celebration.

A 10.30am church service will precede the 12.30pm lunch for people who are homeless, mentally ill, drug addicted or lonely.

Families and other community members have also been invited.

Volunteers will serve 100 kilograms of prawns, 50 hams, 40 turkeys, 500 plum puddings and about 55 litres of ice cream.

Elsewhere, seafood has again proven a popular option for Christmas feasts.

Sydney Fish Markets vendors have sold 600 tonne of seafood, including 120 tonnes of prawns.

More than 110,000 people walked through the market during its 36-hour marathon 5am Tuesday to 5pm on Christmas Eve session.

Oysters sold at a rate of 390 per minute.

Fish markets general manager Bryan Skepper said the mood was festive despite the crowds.

"Today was just madness all day," he said.

"It was a really nice feel."

Christmas Day has been forecast to hit up to 28 degrees with high chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
