The NSW government is on course to be returned to office, according to the latest poll.

The Galaxy/Daily Telegraph survey of 820 voters taken on Wednesday and Thursday evening, puts the coalition ahead of Labor 54-46 on a two-party preferred basis.

That's one point up on the government's result last month.

Its primary vote is also up one percentage point to 44 per cent, while the opposition's primary vote remains at 36 per cent.

Only 38 per cent of people surveyed were able to name Luke Foley as alternative premier compared to the 65 per cent who correctly identified incumbent Mike Baird.

Asked who would make better premier, 49 per cent favoured Mr Baird, 24 per cent preferred Mr Foley and 27 per cent were uncommitted.
