Nearly 800 NSW drivers have been caught speeding in the lead-up to Australia Day.
One person died on NSW roads on Friday, the first day of the four-day Operation Safe Return campaign, and 781 speed-infringement notices were issued.
The operation will target speeding, seatbelt and helmet use.
Police have already conducted 37,734 breath tests and laid 21 drink-driving charges.
Drivers who fell foul of the law on Friday included a 23-year-old who was allegedly caught driving 133km/h in a 100km/h zone north of Mudgee.
Police say he'd already been disqualified from driving and had a woman and two children under four in the car with him at the time of the alleged offences.
"More than 20 drivers were charged with drink-driving offences," Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith of the NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol said in a statement on Saturday.
"This is a dangerous and stupid thing to do. It not only endangers you but other road users. Those that commit these offences will be targeted and prosecuted.
"With 168 major crashes and one fatality, I'd like to again remind drivers to slow down, stay within the speed limit; no deadline is worth dying for."
