NSW hospitals busiest in Australia: data

NSW's hospitals have the busiest emergency departments and perform the most elective surgeries in the country, new data shows.

NSW's hospitals are the busiest in the country when it comes to emergency departments and elective surgeries.

More than 714,100 people presented to NSW's emergency departments from January to March, the Bureau of Health Information's latest quarterly data reveals.

That means an increase of 1.6 per cent over the same period last year.

During the same period 52,717 elective surgeries were performed in the state's hospitals, an increase of 1.7 per cent.

Western Sydney hospitals are facing record demand but performing well, NSW Health deputy secretary Susan Pearce said in a statement on Wednesday.

About three-quarters of patients spent four hours or less in emergency departments and 154,876 arrived by ambulance.

More than 92 per cent of arrivals by ambulance were transferred to care of hospital staff within 30 minutes of their arrival - a marginal improvement on last year.
