NSW seems the place to be.

Its footy codes are doing well - rugby, AFL and league - and Sydney is enjoying the strongest house price gains in the country.

New data also shows workers are in the greatest demand in the nation's most populous state.

Over the past year, advertisements on the internet for jobs in NSW have soared more than 21 per cent, almost double the pace of Australia as a whole in seasonally adjusted terms.

The Department of Employment's vacancy report for August, released on Wednesday, showed job ads for NSW rose by 3.7 per cent, although the honours in the month went to the Northern Territory (up 8.3 per cent) and South Australia (rising 7.1 per cent).

However, such buoyancy by-passed the ACT, where job ads actually declined 1.1 per cent in August and over the year rose by a meagre four per cent.

All occupational groups monitored by the department rose in the month, led by a 6.8 per cent increase in demand for clerical and administrative workers.

Overall, job ads rose 3.8 per cent in August to be 12.8 per cent higher over the year.
