Police will be "cracking down hard" on late-night revellers doing the wrong thing, as NSW prepares for its first weekend under its new anti-violence laws.

The NSW government's 3am last drinks and 1.30am lockouts for CBD and Kings Cross licensed premises came into effect on Monday.

But Premier Barry O'Farrell admits police will face their "first major test" under the new regime this weekend, when thousands of people flood into the CBD for the Mardi Gras.

"I expect there to be teething problems," Mr O'Farrell said during question time on Thursday.

"There's likely to be a great deal of frustration out there."

Police would be out in force this weekend, conducting high-visibility operations across the CBD and Kinds Cross, he said.

"On Saturday night, there will be hundreds of extra police on duty to deal with the huge Mardi Gras crowds," he said.

"(They will be) cracking down hard on those who do the wrong thing."

He warned licensed venues and owners risked fines of up to $11,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 12 months if they failed to comply with the new laws.
