NSW man bail refused after child assault

A Sydney man accused of indecently assaulting an eight-year-old girl on a street will see a mental health nurse before his next court appearance on Monday.

A mentally ill man accused of indecently assaulting an eight-year-old on a suburban Sydney street will spend the night behind bars.

Gerardo Gaston Huertas, 38, was allegedly spotted running through Allison Park in Randwick, in Sydney's east, shortly after the child told her father she had been indecently assaulted on a nearby street.

It's alleged she was sitting on the front fence of a property when Huertas indecently assaulted her. When she tried to get away, it's alleged he grabbed her arm.

Police say he fled when a neighbour intervened, at which point the girl spoke to her father and police were called.

Huertas has been charged with indecently assaulting a child under 16 and assault with intent to have sexual intercourse.

The South Coogee man did not apply for bail during a brief appearance before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday and it was formally refused.

The court heard Huertas suffered from schizophrenia and would see a mental health nurse before he reappeared before Central Local Court on Monday.
