A man allegedly caught filming people on his mobile phone at a Sydney shopping centre has been charged with possessing child abuse material.

Police stopped the 46-year-old man at a shopping centre in Macquarie Fields around 3.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday after reports he had been filming people on his mobile phone.

He was arrested a short time later and taken to Macquarie Fields police station.

Officers searched the man's home in Glenfield, where they seized electronic storage devices and a mobile phone that allegedly contained child abuse material, police say.

The man was charged with possession of child abuse material and behaving in an offensive manner in a public place.
