Police have charged a man over the death of a young girl in the NSW Hunter region three years ago.

The nine-year-old's body was found at a home in Clarence Town on July 17, 2011.

Her death was considered suspicious and detectives from Port Stephens Local Area Command established Strike Force Nylon to investigate.

Following what police describe as an "exhaustive" inquiry, detectives arrested a 60-year-old man on Tuesday.

He was charged with manslaughter and bailed to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on March 17.
