Police have charged a second man over the alleged Bondi bashing of Michael McEwen.

The 23-year-old had to be placed in an induced coma after he was assaulted near the intersection of Campbell Parade and Roscoe streets shortly before Christmas.

On Friday investigators charged a 20-year-old man at Kariong on the Central Coast with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear before Gosford Local Court on Saturday.

Mr McEwen had to undergo emergency surgery in December to relieve the pressure on his brain, including the removal of a piece of his skull.

Police say he went was operated on again on Friday so surgeons could reattach the skull fragment.

A 23-year-old man previously charged with affray over the assault is now before the courts.

Mr McEwen's father made an emotional address to media in the days after the alleged assault.

"I don't understand how somebody can have so much hate in their soul that they can actually do something to another person when they put their life in danger like that," Mr McEwen said then.

"If Michael hadn't been so young, so fit, so healthy, he could have been the next Thomas Kelly."
