A man has been charged after his friend fell from the boot of his car in NSW's central west.

A man has been charged after his friend fell from the boot of his car in the central west of NSW.

Police say the 18-year-old was sitting on the boot of the car that his friend was driving near Mudgee at about 11pm (AEDT) on January 26 when he fell and hit the roadway.

He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries and has remained at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

Following an investigation into the incident, police said on Saturday that the 19-year-old driver has been with a number of traffic offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, drive recklessly, and drive while under the influence.

He was issued with a future court attendance notice and will appear in Mudgee Local Court in April.
