An early-morning drive turned into a frightening ordeal for a Sydney man, who was allegedly forced to drive a hooded stranger 100km up the coast.

Police say the 57-year-old was stopped at traffic lights in Leumeah, in Sydney's southwest, on Tuesday morning when the hoodie-clad man jumped in his passenger seat.

The driver told police the stranger, who is not believed to have been armed, directed him to drive.

He drove for more than 100km until he insisted on making a toilet stop at a Central Coast petrol station.

When the car stopped at Jilliby, near Wyong, the alleged carjacker got out of the car and disappeared.

The shocked 57-year-old went to a nearby woman for help.

"I actually thought he was having a heart attack because he was holding his chest and severely shaking," Julie Gergely told the Seven Network.

"I couldn't quite work it out and then I heard him say he has been kidnapped.

"Then he said hijacked and he said, 'Please call the police'."
