He had just recovered from a violent home invasion that left him with a stab wound to his eye.

But barely weeks out of hospital, a 46-year-old NSW man was attacked again and killed inside his granny flat in South Murwillumbah.

Police were called on Friday morning to the unit, nestled within the north coast town's industrial area, after a member of the public called triple zero.

Police found the man's dead body and the man's son, who was also injured in the home invasion.

The 25-year-old son, who didn't live at the flat, suffered minor injuries and was treated in hospital.

Police confirmed it was not the first time the man had been attacked in his home.

In April, police found the man stabbed in the eye and another man suffering serious head injuries after they were attacked.

They both underwent weeks of treatment in a Gold Coast hospital.

Detective Inspector Brendan Cullen said police were looking at any possible connections between the brutal assault and Friday's suspected murder.

"It's a bit early to say at this point in time if they are linked or not linked," he told reporters.

"But it's certainly an avenue of inquiry."

Det Insp Cullen said police would talk to the 48-year-old man involved in the April assault.

Police would not comment on how the father died.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything near the Quarry Road home around 3am on Friday.
