NSW man who helped cop killer walks free

James Strudwick has been given a suspended jail sentence for his role in helping convicted cop murderer Michael Allan Jacobs.

A young man who tried to help convicted cop murderer Michael Allan Jacobs by hiding bullets has been given a suspended sentence.

James Strudwick, 23, walked free from Tamworth District Court on Monday after Judge Colin Charteris suspended his nine month prison sentence and ordered that he enter into a good behaviour bond.

Strudwick's mother, Sharon Strudwick, was going out with Jacobs when he shot Tamworth police officer David Rixon dead during a random breath test on March 2 last year.

The court heard that in the aftermath of the shooting, Sharon Strudwick ordered her son to flush some bullet cartridges from Jacobs' gun down the toilet.

Mr Strudwick pleaded guilty to one count of perverting the course of justice last week.

In October, Jacobs, 49, became the first person in NSW to receive a mandatory life sentence for murdering a police officer.

Jacobs shot Senior Constable Rixon through the chest without warning before screaming, "Die, I'm sorry. Sorry sir, sorry."

Sen Const Rixon returned fire, hitting Jacobs in the leg, abdomen and shoulder.

Sen Const Rixon died at the scene while Jacobs later underwent life-saving surgery.

He consistently denied murdering the officer and instead attempted to pin the blame on his drug dealer.

But the jury rejected this scenario, taking less than an hour to find Jacobs guilty.

Sharon Strudwick, who pleaded guilty alongside her son to perverting the course of justice, will face a sentence hearing next April.
