NSW MPs reject own inquiry into brothels

NSW MPs are part of an inquiry into brothel regulation but say they are concerned its findings could compromise the safety of sex workers.

Dissenting committee members on a NSW parliamentary inquiry into brothels say they are concerned more police power over sex workers could compromise their safety.

Three NSW MPs say sex workers would be left vulnerable with greater police power and they would be pushed underground if forced to register as part of a new licensing system to be recommended by the inquiry.

Labor's Jo Haylen and Kathy Smith, along with Independent Alex Greenwich, have released a statement rejecting the inquiry's recommendations as it prepares to publish its findings.

"We are concerned that increasing police power, especially entry powers, could compromise the safety and privacy of sex workers," the trio said in a statement on Sunday.

"(The finding) ignores the historic links between police corruption and sex work as proven during the Wood Royal Commission."

Sex workers have previously vowed to fight any move towards a licensing system or register, which they say have failed in other states and risk branding workers with a lifetime of discrimination and stigma.

Chief executive of the sex workers' union Scarlet Alliance, Janelle Fawkes, has said the move would push sex workers into the shadows.

"The requirements you need to satisfy in order to become licensed are so extreme that the majority of people simply can't meet them and end up having to operate outside of the legal sector," Ms Fawkes told AAP while the inquiry was under way.
