Friends of an avid climber killed in a rock slide in the NSW Blue Mountains have remembered him for his energy, humility and gentle nature.

Dave Gliddon, 36, died when a section of sandstone fell from above at Wentworth Falls on Wednesday afternoon while he was working as a NSW parks contractor at a closed cliff track.

Two of his colleagues, aged 26 and 27, were trapped and were later winched to safety but authorities were only able to retrieve Mr Gliddon's body on Thursday afternoon.

Friends took to Facebook to share their memories of the 36-year-old, many describing climbing adventures.

"(He was) the sweetest friend who made you want to be more tolerant and patient, more adventurous, more familial, learn all the skills," one woman wrote.

Others described him as "a legend" and "one of the brightest burning souls".

Mr Gliddon's colleagues are recovering in hospital.
