A man who jumped into the ocean to escape police following a chase in Wollongong has been arrested and charged under Skye's Law.

The 35-year-old initially ignored instructions to stop his Toyota Tarago when spotted by police on Friday evening, eventually running from the car and leaping into the water near Cliff Drive.

A search involving the Police Rescue Squad, an ambulance helicopter and SES volunteers stretched into Saturday morning but failed to find the man.

Following a tip-off he was eventually arrested at an address in Fairy Meadow.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with failing to stop when pursued by police, driving while disqualified, using an uninsured and unregistered vehicle, failing to stop after a collision and breaching bail.
