A senior NSW police officer has been charged for shoplifting.

The male chief inspector, attached to a Metropolitan Region command, allegedly stole items from a supermarket.

On Friday, he was issued with a future court attendance notice for the offences of larceny and corrupt reward.

Police will allege the theft occurred on Tuesday evening while the officer was off-duty.

He was suspended from duty with pay, pending the outcome of the court case.

He will appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on July 1.
