Senior police have criticised NSW drivers after 4800 speeding fines were issued during the wet Easter long weekend.

Four people, including two children, died on the state's roads during the four-day period - the worst result since 2011.

A further 189 people were injured.

Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said she was "extremely disappointed" many drivers had ignored the police message to adjust their driving to the wet conditions.

In one case, a driver was cited for driving more than 80km/h over the limit, she told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

"This attitude to driving has to change," Ms Burn said.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander John Hartley said it clear the attitude of motorists had to change.

"We have to call it for what it is - it's killing people," he said.

He said 298 people were charged with drink-driving, and another 222 people returned positive drug tests.

The four NSW deaths brought the national Easter road toll to 22, up from 12 in the same period last year.

Queensland led the Easter statistics with eight deaths.
