A police station in the NSW Hunter Valley has been evacuated after a man walked inside with a hand grenade.

A man has walked into a police station in the NSW Hunter Valley with a hand grenade - prompting the building to be evacuated.

The man walked in to Cessnock Police Station on Wednesday afternoon carrying the explosive, a NSW Police spokeswoman told AAP.

The building was evacuated and people are being urged to avoid the area until Australian Defence Force officers safely remove the explosive shell.

The act is not being treated as suspicious or deliberate and AAP understands the man may have been handing the device in to be disposed of.
