NSW police vigilant after elevated threat

The NSW Police say it had already assessed its threat level as high following last year's national terror threat elevation.

NSW police officers are being urged to be vigilant at home as well as at work after the terror threat level against Australian police was raised to high.

Acting NSW Police Commissioner Catherine Burn says the state's force assessed its own threat level as high in September after sweeping terrorism raids and the raising of the national threat level.

"I issued a reminder to all our police to remain vigilant at all times whether that is on duty or off duty," Ms Burn told reporters on Tuesday.

Ms Burn said the threat level was raised because of the general threat environment rather than any specific issue.

That includes shootings of police in Canada and France and the Sydney cafe siege coupled with terrorist activity overseas.

Ms Burn said when the national terrorism threat level was raised by the federal government in September from medium to high, NSW Police assessed their threat as the same.

"We put in place a number of strategies at that particular time," she said on Tuesday.

"So for us we have already assessed the environment for police as high."

At some police stations security has been heightened, and from Tuesday, officers have been asked to log their locations into mobile data terminals each time they go out.

Despite the heightened security, Ms Burn said NSW officers should continue to wear their uniforms and walk proudly.
