NSW pregnant woman's alleged killer held

The week after his murder trial led to a hung jury, Christopher Anderson will remain behind bars after a bail application was refused in a Sydney court.

A man accused of murdering his pregnant girlfriend in Sydney will remain behind bars after he was denied bail.

Christopher John Anderson is accused of murdering Allira Green with a single stab wound to her chest in the early hours of August 3, 2013, when she was five months pregnant.

Anderson applied for bail at the Supreme Court on Friday after a jury in his murder trial was unable to reach a verdict last week, but Justice Lucy McCallum rejected his bid.

Anderson's barrister Charles Waterstreet on Friday said his client's mother and sister are ill and he wanted to be at home with them.

Anderson's only sister is suffering from grade-four heart failure and requires oxygen when resting. His mother is also troubled by a serious heart condition, the court heard.

Mr Waterstreet proposed strict bail conditions that he described as "virtual" imprisonment, including that he only be allowed to leave the house with his mother or sister.

Judge McCallum acknowledged the benefits of Anderson being with his family.

"The community has an interest in the integrity of the family unit, particularly when the mother of the accused is unwell and wanting the support and comfort of her son," she said.

But she refused bail.

It is expected he will face a re-trial later this year.

During the trial Anderson claimed he was acting in self-defence and had been trying to "rescue" Ms Green and his unborn child from her ice addiction at the time of her death.

The crown alleges Ms Green, 23, was stabbed by Anderson after a scuffle broke out between him and two other women - Allira Holt and Louise Bodeker - at a Maroubra unit in Sydney's east.
