NSW puppy killer sentenced to jail

A NSW puppy killer has been sentenced to at least a year in jail and banned for life from owning an animal.

A man who bashed a litter of puppies and dumped their bodies in bushland in the NSW Hunter region will spend at least a year behind bars.

Nathan Thompson has also been banned for life from owning an animal after killing the nine pups earlier this year.

The 25-year-old collected the bull terrier puppies in March after their owner failed to sell the animals on the website Gumtree.

Thompson took the animals to a location at Kurri Kurri, near Newcastle, where he began smashing them over the head with a rock and tossing their bodies into the bush.

A passer-by walking his dogs came across the gruesome sight, prompting Thompson to flee with some puppies that were still alive.

One puppy out of the litter survived the attack and was later named `Lucky'.

Thompson pleaded guilty to a string of animal cruelty charges and was sentenced in Newcastle Local Court on Monday.

He was sentenced to 18 months' jail with a 12-month non-parole period.
