NSW Riverina faces bushfire threat

The NSW Rural Fire Service says the state's southwest will face a high threat of bushfires this weekend.

Firefighters are urging residents in southwest NSW to prepare for bushfires this weekend, with dry, hot and windy conditions forecast for the region.

NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Ben Shepherd said most of the state wouldn't face severe fire danger weather, but conditions would worsen in the Riverina.

"There is the possibility on Saturday that we will see some more potentially dangerous fire dangers in the Riverina and southern Riverina area," Mr Shepherd told AAP on Thursday.

He said affected council areas include Berrigan, Conargo, Corowa, Deniliquin, Jerilderie Murray, Urana and Wakool.

On Friday, temperatures in the area are tipped to hit 40C with northeasterly winds of up to 30km/h, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Mr Shepherd said the conditions forecast for the Riverina were particularly worrying given the number of tourists in the region at this time of year.

"The reason why that tends to be a concern is that ... we do tend to see a lot of tourists, especially from Victoria heading to that area," Mr Shepherd said.

He said the RFS would assess the severity of the fire risk in the region over the next couple of days.

Just 13 bushfires, all of them under control, are currently burning across the state.

"We're quite fortunate at the moment," Mr Shepherd said.

"It is hot out here and it is dry, but we're not seeing the wind."

He said that "until such time as we see those come together", fire danger across the state would probably not hit the RFS's "severe" level.
