NSW schools to make their results public

Public schools in NSW will have to publicly self-report on student results and teaching methods under a framework to be introduced next year.

NSW public schools will soon have to report on their academic performance and teaching methods as part of a plan to lift student results.

Under the Schools Excellence Framework to be introduced in 2015, schools will have to publicly report HSC and NAPLAN results, and set out a plan to improve teaching standards.

The aim is to push a school's brightest students further while helping the most disadvantaged out of a cycle of underperformance.

It's hoped the new framework will identify where each school's strengths and weaknesses lie. The internal assessments will be reviewed by the NSW education department.

"It highlights, even for the highest-performing schools, where their weaknesses may be and where they can improve," Education Minister Adrian Piccoli told ABC radio on Friday.

He said the goal of the plan was to target growth in student results.

"Because whether you're the best-performing student or you're a student that's struggling, parents want to see growth," he said.

The reports, which are shared with communities in an annual report, will also show how public schools are using funding delivered under the Gonski agreement to boost student performance.
