A petrol station attendant has been tied up and locked in a toilet block during an attempted robbery in Sydney's south.

A man who went into the Caringbah service station early on Saturday morning noticed noises coming from the toilet block.

He found the attendant tied up inside.

The attendant was taken to Sutherland Hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening.

An ATM had been damaged but no cash was missing.

The 66-year-old attendant told police he was putting out the garbage when he was assaulted by two men.
