NSW teenager Carley Thomas produced a new personal best to claim the silver medal in the women's 800m at the world U20 athletics championships in Finland.

Third at the final lap bell, Thomas came home in a time of two minutes 1.13 seconds, with gold medallist Diribe Welteji from Ethiopia running the first sub two-minute race in the 32-year history of the championships.

"I was just trying to stick behind the lead people and stay in touch and give it all I had at the end," Thomas said.

She made a strong move down the back straight to move to second, fought hard on the bend and never lost form right to the line.

"I was just thinking it's not over until I cross the line. I just had to get to the finish and go as hard as I could," Thomas said.

The 17-year-old bettered her personal best by more than two seconds, to set a new mark for the second time in two days.

Delias Sclabas ran a Swiss U20 record for bronze.
