Premier Mike Baird has promised there will be no nasty surprises when his government delivers its budget update next week.

Although most of the attention will be on federal Treasurer Joe Hockey's mid-year budget update on Monday, the NSW government will also be releasing its revised budgetary outlook during the week.

Mr Baird said the document would concentrate on bringing down debt while delivering on services.

"There will be no nasty surprises," the premier said on Saturday.

In his June budget, Treasurer Andrew Constance revealed NSW had made a whopping $3.5 billion turnaround in 2013/14, posting a surplus of almost $1 billion.

That was thanks largely to a buoyant property market and a $703 million federal government payment to NSW for the Pacific Highway upgrade, which arrived a little earlier than expected.

After this surprising result, the budget was expected to return to a $283 million deficit in 2014/15 and tipped to be back in surplus from 2015/16 and beyond.

Mr Constance also used his budget speech to remind voters of the "clear choice" between Labor and the coalition when it came to partially selling off the state's electricity distribution network.

The coalition is seeking a mandate for the plan, saying it will unlock $20 billion to be ploughed back into infrastructure projects.

Mr Baird was in Sydney's southwest on Saturday to officially open the widening of the M5 west motorway.
