NSW to give $500,000 to Philippines

The NSW premier has announced a $500,000 aid package will be sent to the Philippines for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

The NSW government will give $500,000 to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Premier Barry O'Farrell announced the aid package on Tuesday, saying the money would "provide immediate relief" to the hundreds of thousands affected by the storm.

"Our thoughts are with those in the region left devastated by the typhoon, including the many Filipino-Australians who have lost loved ones or may not yet know their fate," Mr O'Farrell said in a statement.

"We are witnessing a tragedy of epic proportions unfolding in the Philippines and the NSW government is ready to do what it can to assist in the emergency relief effort."

Earlier on Tuesday, the federal government said a team of 36 medical professionals would be sent to the Philippines.

The team will be able to treat up to 4000 patients over a two-week period.

Anyone concerned for the welfare of family and friends is advised to contact the Department of Foreign Affairs.
