An early morning argument has ended in the deaths of two men in a tiny town in southern NSW.

Ben Green was shot dead and his brother Hubert Green suffered a minor gunshot wound on Friday morning after an argument escalated in Nimmitabel, south of Cooma.

The confrontation, involving four people, broke out at a home on Boyd St.

Ben, 32, died at the scene while Hubert, 28, suffered a minor injury and another person was uninjured.

Another man, a 58-year-old, was later found dead in his car in a Nimmitabel backstreet.

Police say his death doesn't appear suspicious.

Local police alongside detectives from the homicide squad are investigating.

The town of about 200 residents is reeling from the tragedy, which claimed a member of one of the area's longest standing families.

The Greens are heavily involved in the farming industry and were early pioneers to the region, locals say.

Hubert is well-known for his shearing skills, picking up awards at rural shows over the past year.

"They're just quiet boys that never got in the road or did anybody any harm," local Jenny Alcock said.

Ms Alcock said Hubert and Ben had bought a property outside of town about two or three years ago where they ran sheep and cattle.

Ben also worked for his uncle, Michael Green, the chairman of the NSW Farmer's Association's Cooma branch, Ms Alcock said.

It is unclear what the relationship is between the Greens and the other man who died.
