The Baird government will offer public transport concessions to asylum seekers, in what the NSW premier says is an effort to share the state's wealth with some of its most vulnerable residents.
"The state budget this week shows that we have the strongest budget in the country, and I believe with that comes an obligation to look after those who need it most," Premier Mike Baird said in a short video published on his Twitter page.
He said asylum seekers "arrive here with nothing, looking to get on their feet", and the government was "very proud to be able to provide some support at the time they need it most".
The concessions announced on Friday will be the most generous offered by any Australian state and will match travel subsidies offered to Gold Pension Concession-cardholders.
Adults who are living in the community on a bridging visa or are applying for one, and are receiving aid from a designated agency, will be eligible for $2.50 all-day tickets that are valid on any form of public transport.
The concessions will be in place from January 1.
