A 75-year-old woman has died in hospital after she was struck by a car while crossing the road near Newcastle on Sunday.

An elderly woman has died in hospital after she was hit by a car while crossing the road near Newcastle.

The 75-year-old was struck while crossing the road in Wallsend on Sunday morning and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition suffering head injuries, but died on Tuesday morning.

Police said the driver was not charged.

Earlier on Tuesday, a 79-year-old Queensland man, who went missing at the weekend, is believed to have been killed in a car crash in the state's north.

The man was last seen leaving his Warwick home on Sunday morning and was reported missing to police the next day.

A passing motorist spotted a Honda Jazz had crashed down an embankment near Tenterfield on the NSW-Queensland border on Monday morning and notified authorities, police said.
