NSW woman escapes sinking car

A woman has escaped a sinking car after losing control of her vehicle and crashing through two safety barriers and into a NSW waterway.

A woman has escaped her sinking car by climbing out of the open driver's window and swimming to safety after crashing through a pedestrian barrier into a waterway near Newcastle in NSW's Hunter region.

The 40-year-old was driving on the Pacific Highway in Swansea, towards the Swansea Bridge about 6pm on Wednesday, when she lost control of the vehicle.

It crashed through a pedestrian safety barrier, then through the bridge safety barrier before the car went into the Swansea Channel and started to sink.

The woman was able to climb out of the open driver's window and swam to shore, police said.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the car is still submerged in the channel.
