NSWRL chief David Trodden wants State of Origin coach Laurie Daley to remain in charge of the Blues for the long-term after ending Queensland's eight-year series dominance.

Daley became the first man since Ricky Stuart in 2005 to coach NSW to a series win, the 2-1 result coming after Wednesday night's loss.

Mal Meninga oversaw all eight of Queensland's victories and Trodden believes Daley can emulate his old Canberra teammate, leading NSW to a sustained period of success.

"He's capable of doing for us what Mal has done for Queensland and we want him to stay for a long time as we love him," Trodden told AAP.

"I think the great news for us is that we are only at the start of the journey and nowhere near achieving what we can achieve.

"If you look at the results of our under-16s, under-18s and under-20s, in those grades we have been dominant.

"If that's an indicator, and I think it probably is, then I think there's a platform for sustained success."

Blues skipper Paul Gallen revealed after Wednesday's 32-8 game three loss that Daley almost quit after last year's 2-1 series defeat, such was his disappointment.

Gallen urged him to continue and said the belief he created amongst the players that Queensland could be tamed - despite having to play twice in Brisbane - was all down to the coach.

"As a captain you are an extension of your coach," Gallen said.

"I never really had much to do with Laurie, but I sat down with him last year and he explained to me what he wanted.

"His passion for the Blues jumper and what he wanted to achieve was unbelievable I was blown away.

"I know how hurt he was after last year and didn't want to do the job. I had to ask him and still he didn't want to do it.

"But I am so glad he did. To win it for him is an enormous feeling."

Like Gallen, former Wests Tigers chairman Trodden didn't know Daley well when he was appointed to replace Geoff Carr last year but said there is no-one else he would want to be coaching NSW.

"We were the biggest outsiders in Origin history before game one and what Laurie and the team have achieved is something quite special," Trodden said.

"There wouldn't be many blokes I would have as high regard for as a person. He is top bracket."

Daley is contracted for another year and has refused to give any indication if he wants to stay on when his current deal expires.

The 44-year-old has privately said the role is more demanding than he'd imagined, and Trodden said the NSWRL is happy to give whatever support he needs to keep him.

"At the end of last year, I was worried about him because he was so drained by the end of game three," he said.

"I think if you'd asked him a day later, he wouldn't have been keen to carry on.

"But once he had the chance to reflect he was super keen to get back in.

"We told him we'd give him whatever he needed to get the job done and we'll keep doing that.

"What makes him a great coach is because everyone wants to play for him and no-one wants to let him down.

"That's not just players. That's everyone concerned with this team.

"Everyone supports him but he's a solid as a rock for everyone around him as well."
