NSWRL set for historic merger with CRL

The NSW Rugby League and Country Rugby League could merge into one body by the end of the year.

The NSW Rugby League and Country Rugby League are on the cusp of a historic merger that could result in the united body being handed an extra $10 million in grassroots funding.

The state-based bodies on Friday announced they had entered into a memorandum of understanding that would see them combine for the first time in 80 years.

Both organisations are working towards a formal merger in November 2020.

The move comes three weeks after ARL commission chairman Peter Beattie urged the entities to merge or else risk losing the money to the Queensland Rugby League.

CRL boss Terry Quinn said it is a significant decision for the game across the state, and comes after a review of the state leagues by administrator Jim Doyle.

"CRL and NSWRL have always been committed to advancing the state of the game in both metropolitan and regional areas and we're pleased to be working alongside NSWRL seeking to create a merged governing body that will continue to serve in the best interests of clubs, participants and volunteers at all levels," Quinn said.

Once the merger is complete, it is expected the combined body would be housed in the NSWRL Centre of Excellence in Homebush - home of the NSW Blues.

"It's a particularly significant day in the history of rugby league in this state," NSWRL boss Dave Trodden said.

"This development is really one of the final steps in a natural progression and is a strong statement that the future of rugby league in New South Wales is secure."
