NT man bitten by shark while spearfishing

A 25-year-old man has been taken to hospital after being bitten on the arm by a shark while spearfishing off Groote Eylandt on Sunday afternoon.

A man has been bitten by a shark while spearfishing off an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Emergency services were called to Groote Eylandt after 12.20pm on Sunday after the 25-year-old was attacked while in the waters off the island.

The man's friends provided first aid on their boat before rushing back to land at Umbukumba.

The man was treated for lacerations to the arm on the island.

He was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition for additional treatment.
