NT man charged after huge kava seizure

Police have charged a Northern Territory man after they seized more than $130,000 worth of kava destined for a remote indigenous community.

A Northern Territory man allegedly tried to smuggle more than $130,000 worth of kava into a remote indigenous community.

Police on Tuesday charged a 35-year-old Galiwinku man following a large seizure of kava within airport freight last October.

"The kava, which was destined for Galiwinku had been separated into more than 1300 deal bags ready for sale," Senior Constable Tania Smith said.

"This haul had a potential profit of more than $130,000.

"Persons profiting from the distribution of kava in remote communities cause considerable social and health problems as well as serious economic hardship."

The man was summonsed to appear in Darwin Local Court on May 9.
