NT MPs accused of circulating sex video

The NT Country Liberals have changed tack over the sex video of one of their MPs, now saying Labor should answer questions about how it was made public.

Labor should investigate how a Country Liberals MP's sex videos were made public, the treasurer says, alleging that politicians were involved in circulating or promoting the explicit footage.

Nathan Barrett resigned from cabinet on Saturday, admitting he had sent two sexually explicit videos to a woman he said he was having an affair with.

She said they were unwanted and that he had manipulated her.

Last month she quit the Country Liberals and has since been photographed with the campaigning team for Damian Hale, Labor's candidate for Mr Barrett's seat of Blain.

The CLP initially condemned Mr Barrett, but on Tuesday changed tack and claimed the release of the videos was intended to damage the party.

"When is the investigation by Labor going to start into how this information got into the public arena in the first place?" Treasurer David Tollner asked on ABC local radio on Wednesday.

He said federal Labor was seeking to amend legislation to target people who share or threaten to share personal sexual content and the party was being hypocritical in the case of Mr Barrett.

"It seems rather cute to me that right in the lead-up to an election campaign very sexual images were circulated without the consent of the person involved, and yet Labor seems to want to turn a blind eye to that and say it's okay to publicly humiliate and damage someone's reputation providing it's in the lead-up to an election campaign," Mr Tollner said.

"I also understand there have been politicians involved in the circulation or the promotion of the circulation of this material, and I think it's high time there was an investigation."

When asked if he agreed with the chief minister's assertion that Mr Barrett was the victim of revenge porn, Mr Tollner said "it's very interesting this lady has links to Damian Hale's campaign".

"I'm not excusing Nathan Barrett's actions, but two wrongs don't make a right," he said.
