An NT police officer is facing assault charges after three youths were arrested in Darwin's north.

A police officer is facing aggravated assault charges after he was involved in the chase and arrest of three youths in Darwin's north.

The youths were arrested in Nakara on Wednesday after a chase on foot and in a car.

A 29-year-old male Northern Territory police officer has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.

He will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on August 11.

A police investigation is ongoing, and people who witnessed the arrests are asked to come forward.

"In particular, police are calling for the female driver of a vehicle, believed to be a Toyota Camry, who assisted a police officer by giving him a lift during the chase," said NT Police Detective Acting Superintendent Lee Morgan.

The NT Police statement also says an "internal discipline process" is under way.
